This beautiful rock offers spectacular diving experiences due to its richness in aquatic life, from Guitar Sharks all the way down to the little Sea Horses. Located some 20 kilometers to the southeast of the Surin Islands, Richelieu Rock can fulfill all your liveaboard diving dreams. This is by far the best dive site in these waters, including the rest of Thailand, though its reputation stretches even further to the entire globe. As a diver, you’re in for the sensation of a lifetime!

Richelieu Rock is covered with all kinds of thick layers of corals, so much so that in places its even hard to see the rock beneath them. As the limestone horse-shoe shaped pinnacle slopes abruptly down to the sandy bottom, the corals increase in size and colour formations. On the south side, the site slopes gently to deeper waters where the small caves created will give the more adventurous diver exciting swim-throughs. The center of the pinnacle provides beginners with shelter from any difficult conditions they have not yet been trained to manage.

Such difficulties may include currents, which can get quite strong as Richelieu Rock dive site is, for the most part, completely exposed. Nevertheless, the rich aquatic life and frequent, fascinating views of Whale Sharks and Manta Rays, bring live aboard divers back to this site time and time again.

Divesite marine life: around the dive site one finds many kinds of Snappers and Trevallies, Blue Powered Surgeon Fish, Sea Horses, Cheveron Barracudas, Turtles, and many types of Moray Eels such as the Shy Dragon or the Giant Yellow Edged Moray and the Zebra and Honeycomb Morays, as well as Guitar Sharks. Here you can find nearly all kinds and colours of coral reef fish, like Butterfly Fish, Angel Fish and Groupers.

Itinerary

SY Ruby sails in Thailand, the Andaman Islands, Malaysia and Myanmar (Burma).

A further 20 kilometers to the north of Koh Bon our luxury liveaboards will sail you to the island of Koh Tachai. This island boasts the paradise white sandy beaches you have been dreaming of and really is the place to visit, particularly if you are a fan of night diving.

The dive site is made up of a series of submerged pinnacles and many boulders, making for excellent swim-throughs. It is mostly famous for sightings of visiting Whale Sharks and Manta Rays but further for the vibrant life that dwells beneath the water.

Koh Tachai is divided into two different kinds of dive sites. The Koh Tachai reef and the Koh Tachai Plateau.

Koh Tachai reef is the sheltered part of the dive site and makes for easier diving when the currents are too powerful. Mild currents here make for a slow drifting dive experience for all diver certification levels. Diving in the later part of the afternoon provides you with the opportunity to see a vast armies of aquatic life rising out of its shelter and playing around the magnificently coloured and widely varied corals.

Koh Tachai Plateau, on the other hand, makes for a more exciting, but also more challenging scuba diving adventure due to its strong currents. The Plateau consists of many sizes of granite rocks and rich gardens of soft and hard corals. In fact the garden on the Plateau itself, with its many shades of coloured corals, is by far the most spectacular in the area.

Currents in this dive site can be quite strong in the Plateau, sometimes making it simply impossible to dive, and rather mild in the reef, where the currents run from south to north.

Koh Tachai Dive Site Details

Maximum depth: 35-40 meters

Visibility: 20+

Temperature: 27+

Divesite marine life: home to a variety of Sea Fans, Anemonies, Sea Sponges and Feather Stars, Huge Napoleon Wrasse and schools of Bannerfish and Fussiliers, Koh Tachai is often by Yellow Tail Baraccudas and Whale Sharks. One also finds Octupus, Cuttlefish and a myriad of corals all around.

Deriving its name from its great depth, Deep Six boasts massive boulders laid on top of each other, creating a maze of caverns and areas to swim through. This really is the place to fine tune your buoyancy skills during your liveaboard scuba diving adventure in the Similan Islands.

As you swim away from the boulders you can drop down to depths of almost 50 meters, encountering a variety of fish and aquatic life. The best thing about this divesite is the Kuhl Sting Rays and the nearly extinct and rarely seen Andaman Sweetlips, which you can only see here.

Enjoy your dive, swimming with gentle Leopard Sharks and see the most fascinating colourful Mantis Shrimps.

Currents here change depending on the flow of the tide and they can are likely to pick up, nudging you away from the boulders; if you need shelter from the storm just head for the eastern part of Deep Six.

Deep Six Dive Site Details

Maximum depth: 40-50 meters

Temperature: 27+ degrees

Visibility: 20+ meters

Divesite marine life: Plenty of small creatures like Harlequins, Pipefish, Octopus, Banded Sea Snakes, Nudibranches, Mantis Shrimps in the protected areas under the boulders, and Kuhl Sting Rays, along with Barracudas, Groupers, Snappers, Sweetlips and, last but not least, Leopard Sharks.

Itinerary

SY Nakamal sails to the Similan Islands, the Surin Islands and the Islands around Phuket. Further south she visits the Butang group of islands. She also visits Myanmar and the Andaman and Nicobar islands belonging to India.

Fun Diving in the Simlan IslandsTo the north of Similan Island number 9 lies Koh Bon island, famous for the massive Manta Rays swimming around its waters. As most other islands around Koh Bon are made of granite, this little island’s limestone outline is a stunning change from the surrounding scenery.

On the southeast side of the island there is a cliff which slopes down into the water almost vertically from the surface, thereby forming a wall of 33 meters. This levels off to a ridge filled with corals before it drops down to over 40 meters. This whole ridge features gardens of beautiful soft corals with an array of blue, yellow and turquoise colours, not usually seen in other dive sites. This makes Koh Bon a spectacular dive site with rare offerings to quench your diver appetite.

Koh Bon is also a spectacular divesite to visit for your liveaboard night diving. This is Lobster central, but bear in mind you are here to just look, not to catch your dinner!

As the dive site bay is sheltered, quite often there are no currents. However on the southwestern side two currents join together to create a rather unpredictable flow, making this site both exciting and exhilarating to the experienced diver. If you find yourself struggling against the currents, just hide round the corner.

Koh Bon West Ridge Dive Site Details

Maximum depth: 35-40 meters

Visibility: 20+

Temperature: 27+

Divesite marine life: with currents transferring a wide variety of nutrients, much aquatic life is attracted to this site, including the Manta Rays mentioned above and also Reef Sharks and a large variety of Barracudas, Tuna fish and Trevallies. Within the cracks and around the ridge you will find Pipefish, Octupus, Nudibranches, Manta Shrimps, Cuttle Fish and all colour shades of Cowrie shells. Also Lobsters at night.

This is the perfect Similan Islands dive site to begin your scuba diving adventures. Jump from our Liveaboard yacht charter into crystal clear waters and gently descend down to 25 meters, where you will encounter scattered rock formations and beautiful soft corals with many Sea Fans, all gracefully complementing each other to create a living garden of colors.

Breakfast Bend coral reef is for the most part only 5 meters deep, which allows for beginner scuba divers to exercise their newly acquired skills and become acquainted with the Similan beauty that further awaits in deeper divesites.

Currents in this divesite are usually fairly quiet and allow for easy diving. The center of the divesite however, tends to split into two currents pushing north and south. Here you have the opportunity to decide which current you wish to ride, as the north stream will float you up to another site, the North Point, and the south stream to more shallow waters.

Maximum depth: 35 – 40 meters

Temperature: 27+ degrees

Visibility: 20+ meters

Divesite marine life: Sweetlips, Snappers, Fusiliers, Bat Fish, Yellow-tail Barracudas, Green Turtles, Octupus, Ghost Pipe Fish in the extended reef, and Garden Eels, many kinds of Trigger fish, as well as Clown Trigger fish, swim together with Leopard Sharks in the sandy bottom of the divesite.
